Amongst the 7.5 crore drug addicts in India, approximately 1 crore are heroin addicts. The drug is readily available across the country because of the illicit cultivation of opium in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and many other states of the country, on a large scale. Moreover, it is also smuggled into India from our neighbouring countries like Afghanistan.
What is heroin?
Heroin, also known as diamorphine among other names, is an opioid most commonly used as a recreational drug for its euphoric effects. Medically, it is used in several countries to relieve pain or in opioid replacement therapy. Heroin is typically injected, usually into a vein: however, it can also be smoked, snorted or inhaled. The onset of effects is usually rapid and lasts for a few hours.
Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, impaired mental function, constipation and addiction. Giving up the habit after long-term use, withdrawal symptoms can begin within hours of last usage.
When administered by injection into a vein, heroin has two to three times the effect as of a similar dose of morphine. It typically comes as a white or brown powder.

Treatment Options for Heroin Addiction
What you experience during heroin addiction treatment is going to solely depend on specific factors including how long you have been using and how much you have been using?
Your recovery will depend on your ability to understand and cope with other challenges, such as underlying psychological problems which may have been caused by (excessive) heroin usage.
There are two kinds of treatment centers: residential and outpatient.
Heroin is highly addictive to a point, where nearly one-quarter of people who use heroin develop a dependency.
Once addiction has developed, users will stop at nothing to get more of the drug even if it means risking their jobs, damaging relationships with loved ones and more.
However, treatment of heroin addiction is very much possible. Timely diagnosis of addiction-induced diseases and their treatment is beneficial.
