Treatment of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is accompanied by phases of mania and despair. Treatment of persons suffering from Schizophrenia comprises of behavioral therapies, psycho therapies, counseling for prevention of substance abuse if substance addiction is present, medication and participation in support groups.
Treatment of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder comprises of three distinct mood states of mania, depression & hypomania, and is ideally treated with mood stabilizers, anti-psychotics & anti-depressants along with psychotherapy which involves counseling.
Treatment of OCD
OCD is characterized by irrelevant thoughts and fears (obsessions), which lead to repetitive behavior (compulsion). Treatment includes Talk Therapy, medication or both. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) & Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may be used in treatment resistant cases.
Alcohol De-Addiction
At IPD units such as rehabilitation centres /psychiatric hospitals, the withdrawal symptoms like seizures, tremors and hallucinations which occur after abstinence, are taken care of. During recovery, medicines are administered. Group therapy(AA,etc.) may also be used.
Tobacco de-addiction
Patients are expected to quit cold turkey or with nicotine replacement therapy after detoxification. The addicted patients usually stay for 3 to 6 months at a rehabilitation centre or a psychiatric/mental hospital to completely overcome all tobacco withdrawal symptoms.
Cocaine de-addiction
The treatment of cocaine addiction begins with a week-long detoxification. After that, the person struggling with cocaine addiction is made to stay cocaine-abstinent for 30-90 days, even longer in some cases, till all withdrawal symptoms and probability of relapse have assuaged.
Heroin de-addiction
Both pharmacological and behavioral therapies can benefit persons who are struggling with addiction to heroin. Cognitive Behavioral TherAapy and Contingency management are two behavioral therapies which have been used successfully to treat heroin addiction.
Smack de-addiction
As in cases of heroin addiction, detoxification followed by Medication Assisted Treatment and behavioral therapies can benefit persons who are struggling with addiction to smack, which is a form of heroin. Both CBT & Contingency Management behavior therapies can be used in such cases too.
Brown Sugar de-addiction
Brown sugar is an adulterated form of heroin, also called smack. Treatment is similar to treatment of smack/heroin addiction. Withdrawal symptoms experienced during treatment include aggravated violent behavior, symptoms of influenza (runny nose) & nausea.
Cough Syrup de-addiction
It is advisable for persons struggling with addiction to cough syrup to get admitted in an IPD setup such as a rehabilitation centre or a psychiatric/mental hospitals as the treatment shall require medication and a detailed comprehensive therapy program, which can be better administered in controlled settings.
Whitener / Spirit de-addiction
School going children have easy access to inhalants present in whiteners & spirits, which are commonly available at stationery stores as correction fluid, thinners, ink removers and glue. It is possible to treat this addiction by long-term counseling, anti-depressants & anti-craving drugs.
Prescription Drugs’ de-addiction
People who are addicted to prescription drugs such as painkillers, opiates, stimulants and/or barbiturates need to go through a medical detoxification program, during which they may experience withdrawal symptoms like seizures, flu-like symptoms when the dosage of the concerned drug is tapered. Relapse prevention is a major challenge.

Treatment of Personality Disorders
Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy & psychoeducation are leveraged in order to treat personality disorders of all three clusters, i.e., cluster A, cluster B & cluster C

Treatment of Dementia
Dementia is a cluster of conditions characterized by impairment of at least two brain functions, such as loss of memory and judgment. Therapies leveraged are Rehabilitation & Occupational Therapies. Medication to be administered is cognition-enhancing medicine.

Treatment of Mania
Mania is characterized by highly elevated and excitable mood states for prolonged periods of time. Mood stabilizers & Anti-psychotics are the most commonly administered medicines for treatment of Mania. Episodes of Mania are usually exhibited by patients suffering from Bipolar Disorder

Treatment of Depression
Depression is a disorder of emotional state that involves persistent feeling of despair and loss of interest in everyday activities. It can be treated by Talk Therapy or medication (administration of anti-depressants) or using a combination of both

Treatment of Anxiety and related Disorders
Anxiety is associated with feelings of fear & worry which meddle with performance of routine chores in an individual’s everyday life. Anxiety disorders include OCD, PTSD and panic attacks. Anxiety and associated disorders can be treated using medication, CBT, Meditation and Psychotherapy.

Treatment of Stress & related Disorders
Stress involves failure to recover from being witness to or having experienced a traumatic or petrifying event. CBT, ERP,ET, Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing along with appropriate medication can help in treatment of stress and associated disorders.

Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive disease which deteriorates memory and compromises crucial functions of the brain. Though there is no cure for this disease, cognition enhancing medication, management strategies and self care (physical exercise) may temporarily alleviate symptoms.

Treatment of Dissociative disorders
The most common Dissociative disorders include Dissociative amnesia, Dissociative Identity Disorder & Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder. Psychotherapies such as talk therapy, counseling or psychosocial therapy are administered for treatment of dissociative disorders. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications or antipsychotic drugs may be prescribed by psychiatrists for treatment of associated symptoms.

Treatment of Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders
Somatic symptom disorder is characterized by the suffering person emphasizing heavily on physical symptoms such as exhaustion and soreness of a muscle; which leads to a lot of emotional anguish and problems carrying out routine tasks. Psychotherapies such as CBT and Family Therapy can be implemented in such cases to tackle the symptoms in addition to administration of anti-depressants.

Treatment of Feeding and Eating Disorders
For people with anorexia nervosa, effective treatment must always include regular and adequate nutrition. People with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder may need to lose some weight to avoid or to overcome medical problems. Psychological treatments include: Family Therapy, CBT, interpersonal psychotherapy & psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Treatment of Sleep – Wake Disorders
Tackling and rectifying irregular sleep-wake patterns of the body focuses on increasing the stimulation to reset the sleep clock in the brain. The primary objective is to have one long sleep phase during night and one long awake phase during day time. Light treatment is one way to help a destabilized body clock. Behavioral counseling may also be beneficial.

Treatment of Neuro-cognitive Disorders
Neuro-cognitive Disorders, often collectively referred to as Organic Brain Syndrome, are a set of conditions which lead to mental impairment. Treatment involves giving time for the injured brain to fully recuperate, followed by administration of pain killers and antibiotics. Occupational therapy & Physical therapy are also leveraged to treat such disorders.
