Understanding MECT: A Comprehensive Overview

When people search and talk about Electroconvulsive Therapy, their usual reaction is to think about the harsh and outdated methods. But today, times have changed and so has our approach towards mental well being. Today’s reality is quite different. It is totally opposite of the scenes portrayed in old movies and previously documented methods. With new modifications, Electroconvulsive Therapy has turned into a sought after non-traditional therapy for many conditions.

mECT is a safe, refined and controlled method of amplifying treatment for those who are not able to receive results from traditional treatment. It’s not as scary as it sounds- and for many, it can be a life altering decision.

What is MECT?

mECT exactly is a non-traditional therapy that stimulates different parts of the brain through a brief and controlled current. It passes through the specific region and resets the brain chemistry to provide relief from different conditions. These disorders usually include- bipolar disorder, major depression & schizophrenia, as per some of the best psychiatrist in India. The modification here is that the individual is given muscle relaxants and put under general anesthesia so that they are devoid of any pain. Such ethical consideration observed under previous engagement makes it modified today.

A good psychiatrist in India will move towards mECT in cases where traditional therapies like Medication and Talk therapy are not able to provide relief.

What does the Procedure Involve?

Pre-Procedure– The client undergoes in-depth evaluation and fasting before the procedure starts.

– Under Supervision– The patient is given anesthesia and a muscle relaxant. Electrodes are placed on the scalp, and a brief electrical impulse is delivered. The entire procedure lasts just a few minutes.

– Post-Procedure–  Patients usually wake up within 10–15 minutes and are monitored for a short time before being discharged or returned to their room.

Clients  usually report feeling well adjusted and better during 6-12 weeks of their treatment sessions.

Is it a Safe Procedure?

Yes. mECT is a very safe procedure as it is provided under controlled conditions, like a rehabilitation centre. According to a study in The Lancet Psychiatry, mECT continues to be one of the most effective treatment modalities for severe depression. It is easier to apply in many conditions and is extremely comfortable due to the use of muscle relaxants and anesthesia (Indian Journal of Psychiatry).

While mECT has always been under the lens, it has proven to be effective and humane for many. As a rehabilitation center, we advocate for more options like mECT for clients suffering from severe conditions.
